Health & Recreation
A Positive outlook on Physical, Mental and spiritual health
Prior to coming to Teen Challenge, many of our clients have neglected their health and as a result, the 12-month program gives them the opportunity to restore their physical bodies as well as their mind, soul and spirit.
Sports and recreation programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.
At the Northern Ontario Men's Centre clients are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to stay fit and have fun. For example, three times a week clients participate in recreational programs at the YMCA. Clients often organize a baseball game, hockey game or pick-up football. Or they play basketball on the residence's outdoor court. Once a week in winter they play floor hockey with a men's group at a local church. Outings to Harmony Beach on Lake Superior are arranged 2-3 times in the summer. Taking part in these sports is an important part of the clients' rehabilitation.
Also, an annual 3-night camping trip is organized at a Church Camp, north of Sault Ste. Marie on Island Lake. Here clients swim, canoe, fish, hike, enjoy a bible study, devotional time, campfires and soccer. The goal is to have fun and relax and to learn to use their recreational time in a constructive way.
